Основы пневматических крыльев: Структура, работа и преимущества

Protection of ships and vessels is the utmost priority during marine operations. The reason is that these vessels are very expensive. To make them safer, different equipment is used during marine operations. Among these, пневматические крылья are commonly used. However, many people don’t understand the basics of pneumatic fenders.

However, pneumatic fenders play a crucial role in marine operations. These fenders are used around ships and vessels to protect them from colliding with the dock platform. Without them, ships’ safety can be highly compromised, especially during docking. In this article, I will discuss everything about pneumatic fenders, including how they work and their benefits.

What are Pneumatic Fenders and Their Function?

As you know, fenders are protective equipment used on ships. Their role is the same as that of a car bumper. They protect the ships from colliding with other structures.

Pneumatic fenders are protective equipment that is filled with compressed air. This air keeps the fender inflated and makes it able to withstand impact. When a vessel approaches the dock, the pneumatic fenders first collide with the dock platform. This way, these fenders absorb the impact force. As a result, they protect the ship or vessel from harsh impacts that could damage it.

First things first – when a vessel comes to dock, it moves with some speed. There is no way to immediately apply the brakes to stop it when it reaches the dock. The vessel’s speed can cause it to collide with the dock platform. As a result of the collision, the vessel’s hull and other parts can be damaged. However, the pneumatic fenders are handy and help safeguard these ships.

These fenders are made of rubber, but they are filled with compressed air. They are installed or hang around the vessels. Now, when a vessel approaches the dock, these fenders hanging around the vessel collide with the dock platform. Due to this collision, these fenders get compressed. The air inside them allows them to compress and absorb the impact force.

In this way, the vessel does not directly face the intense impact, thereby improving its safety. Pneumatic fenders can be used for both STD (Ship to Dock) and STS (Ship to Ship) marine operations. Their primary function is to absorb the impact force and reduce the reaction force. These pneumatic fenders are durable as they are made in multiple layers.

Construction of Pneumatic Fenders

As I mentioned earlier, the pneumatic fenders are exceptionally durable because of their rugged construction. As a result, these marine fenders can withstand harsh impacts without breaking.  Here are three primary layers that make up the structures of pneumatic fenders:

  • Outer layer
  • Reinforcement layer
  • Innermost layer for making the fender airtight

The outer layer is typically made of abrasion-resistant material. It is the most external layer, remaining exposed to UV rays, sunlight, moisture, abrasion, and other factors. So it needs to be rugged to remain in good condition for a long time. Manufacturers use either natural or synthetic rubber blended with different compounds. These compounds make the layers effectively resist moisture, UV rays, and abrasion.

The reinforcement layer is present in the middle. It consists of a synthetic interlinked tire cord fabric. In this way, they make a network of tire cords, which improves the strength of these fenders. Remember, the reinforcement layer helps in distributing the pressure stress across the fenders. As a result, pneumatic fenders can withstand extreme collision forces.

The innermost layer, which is the last one, is also made of rubber. However, it is highly impermeable, preventing the compressed air inside from escaping. In other words, this layer acts as chambers that enclose the compressed air. This layer is made airtight to ensure smooth operation of these pneumatic fenders. Even when fenders collide with the dock, the air compresses and the fenders deform, but no air leaks.

Быстрая подсветка: Apart from layers, pneumatic fenders also have some other parts. Examples include flanges, air valves, and safety valves. The valves help inflate the fenders by supplying compressed air. Safety valves help ensure the fenders are the same by controlling the correct pressure inside. If the fender is overpressurized, air is bled off to maintain balanced pressure.

How Do Pneumatic Fenders Work?

The operation of pneumatic fenders relies on the compressed air inside them. As I mentioned earlier, these fenders are installed on the sides of the vessels. When a vessel comes closest to the dock, these fenders first make contact with the dock platform and then collide with it. During this, the air inside the fenders is compressed by the impact force.

The cylindrical fenders deform significantly under the impact force. In this way, the fenders absorb the kinetic energy that comes from impact. As a result, the vessel is not affected by this impact. Interestingly, the reaction force of these pneumatic fenders is very small. This means the vessel receives no significant force in return.

This makes the vessel safer during this collision. Remember, these pneumatic fenders are very flexible because of the air inside them. So they can distribute the stress or pressure across the fenders. Even if the pressure hits one spot, the stress it causes is not localized to a specific area. If this happens, it would damage the fenders.

Therefore, stress is distributed across the surface of pneumatic fenders. As a result, the fenders remain safe despite heavy deformation. Once the vessel moves back, stress is removed from the pneumatic fenders. As a result, it regains its original shape from the deformed state. This deformation of the fenders was caused by compressed air pressurized during the collision.

Benefits of Pneumatic Fenders

Pneumatic морские крылья have been in use for years. In fact, their use and adaptability are very common among cargo vessels. In the section below, I will explain the key benefits of these fenders, helping you understand why they are so useful.

1- Energy Absorption

As I mentioned earlier, pneumatic fenders are filled with compressed air. The ship or vessel approaching the dock has kinetic energy. This energy can be damaging if the ship directly collides with the dock. However, the pneumatic fenders absorb this energy. How? Actually, fenders are present between the vessel and the docking platform. When they are hit, the air inside the fenders compresses, allowing the fender to deform. This compression absorbs the energy, preventing damage to the ship.

2- Low Reaction Force

When something compresses, it quickly regains its shape, generating a reaction force. When pneumatic fenders compress, they gradually regain their shape. The air compressed inside the fenders does not immediately force the fenders back. This reduces the reaction force, making the ship or vessel very safe. If this reaction force had been high, it would have pushed the ship back, potentially damaging it. This back push can even make the ship drift or become unstable. The low reaction force from the fenders ensures the vessel experiences very little resistance, keeping it stable.

3- Easy to Install and Portable

Pneumatic fenders are very easy to install and require no mounting structures. You can employ them using dedicated chains or ropes. These fenders remain hanging around the vessel. Apart from installation, these fenders are very portable. Carrying them isn’t a big problem since they float. If your ship has tight space, you can even leave them floating with your ship. Additionally, they are lightweight, easy to retrieve, and can be stored on the ship.

4- Require Low Maintenance

As previously discussed, the pneumatic fenders are very durable. They consist of three layers, each providing them with the strength to withstand intense collision forces. The outermost layer is abrasion and UV-ray-resistant. Harsh weather, including high temperatures, cannot affect these fenders. The reinforcement layers make these fenders withstand harsh forces comfortably. The innermost layer protects the compressed air and prevents it from escaping. This simple yet practical design makes pneumatic fenders reliable options that need no regular maintenance.

5- Suitable for Different Vessel Sizes and Types

Interestingly, there are different types of pneumatic fenders available. These include:

  • Тип стропы
  • Chain-Tire Net Type
  • Hydro-pneumatic fender

Sling type is suitable for small boats and ships and is very lightweight. On the other hand, Chain-Tire Net Types are more durable and used for large ships and vessels. Hydro-pneumatic fenders contain both compressed air and water. These pneumatic fenders are ideal for heavy-duty vessels and submarines. Additionally, these fenders are also available in different sizes and shapes. This makes them fit for a wide range of vessels. You can use them for passenger ships, cargo vessels, oil and gas transporters, and the list goes on.

6- Useful in Different Marine Operations

One of the key benefits of pneumatic fenders is their versatility. This means they can be used in a wide range of marine operations. For example, you can use them in STS and STD operations. Additionally, their use cannot be overlooked at offshore platforms. Whether you’re in the middle of the ocean or docking at ports, these devices are helpful. Their role and importance become even more critical when the weather is harsh. They protect the vessels that dock in bad weather, such as high tides and waves.
